A highly collectible pair of Christie Tyler “Aeroplane” lounge chairs, an iconic post-war British design dating from around 1947. Originally produced using bent aluminium tubing and aircraft manufacturing techniques developed during WWII, these chairs are celebrated for their distinctive floating form and ingenious reclining suspension mechanism.
Featuring the gold painted aluminium frames (not original) with deep olive green ribbed velour upholstery (original), these chairs retain their authentic mid-century character. The patented tilting seat mechanism provides a gentle, hammock-like reclining action, making them both visually striking and exceptionally comfortable.
Unrestored and in vintage condition with age-related wear consistent with use. Upholstery presents well with a lovely vintage patina, and the frames have cosmetic marks as expected. Both chairs are structurally sound, and the reclining mechanisms operate as intended. Please refer to the photographs as they form part of the description. These chairs would benefit from further cleaning / restoration and as such we are selling as seen in the pictures.
Approximate dimensions (per chair):
- Height: 82 cm
- Width: 64 cm
