A rare and beautifully proportioned IKEA KÖGE coffee table, dating from the early 1960s and documented in the original IKEA catalogues of the period.
The KÖGE was part of IKEA’s early range of Danish original furniture, produced during a period when IKEA worked closely with Danish furniture manufacturers. The 1960 IKEA catalogue describes the KÖGE as a modern Danish table with a teak top, strongly rounded edging and a practical woven rattan newspaper shelf, specifically highlighting its Danish furniture craftsmanship.
The 1961 IKEA catalogue features the KÖGE again, specifying a Danish-treated, oiled teak top, rounded edges, woven rattan magazine shelf and a solid teak underframe. The catalogue dimensions are 128 × 50 × 56 cm.
Our example measures 129 × 50 × 55 cm, corresponding almost exactly to the original catalogue specification.
The table features a beautifully figured teak top with a substantial softly rounded edge, elegant tapered legs and its original woven rattan magazine shelf. The combination of warm teak and natural woven rattan gives the piece a wonderful early Scandinavian character, while its generous 129 cm width makes it equally useful as a coffee table, display table or low occasional table.
An excellent example of early Scandinavian IKEA design, and an increasingly interesting piece for collectors of vintage IKEA and Danish modern furniture.
Presented in excellent vintage condition.
The table remains unrestored and has been lightly cleaned only, preserving its original finish, colour and natural patina.
There are some minor age-related marks and signs of use consistent with its age, but nothing significant to detract from its appearance or everyday use.
The original woven rattan magazine shelf is complete and remains taut and strong, with no breaks, damage or repairs.
