A superb example of the highly sought-after G Plan Astro ‘Spider’ coffee table, designed by Victor Bramwell Wilkins and introduced by G Plan in 1971.
This distinctive round teak coffee table is one of G Plan’s most recognisable and desirable designs, featuring the beautifully sculpted teak base supporting a circular glass top.
The ‘true’ G Plan Astro
There is a little confusion surrounding the name Astro, with the term increasingly being used for the earlier round and oval coffee tables from the G Plan Fresco range. These are sometimes described as Astro tables, but this is not strictly correct.
The Astro was launched in November 1971, and the design is now more commonly referred to as the ‘Spider’ because of its distinctive sculptural base. Designed by Victor Bramwell Wilkins, it was considerably more expensive to produce than G Plan’s more conventional coffee tables and appears to have had a relatively short production run, with the design being discontinued around 1974.
This later Astro/Spider design is therefore quite different from the more commonly seen circular and oval G Plan coffee tables produced from the early 1960s onwards.
This table is in excellent original vintage condition, retaining its original finish and character. There is slight wear to the glass top, consistent with age and use.
