A beautiful unrestored extending teak dining room ‘Fonseca’ table and four chairs designed by John Herbert for Younger. Highly influenced by Scandinavian design the set includes two carver chairs and 2 dining chairs. These are finished in original black vinyl.
The table extends with a fold out leaf as shown creating a large family dining table easily seating six. The top has a lovely warm grain that continues with the fold out leaf.
The four chairs have a sculptural form very reminiscent of Danish manufacturer Moller and a seat covered in the original black vinyl. The suite is sturdy and solid, and given a light clean. The chair upholstery is original and there are signs of wear on the vinyl – whilst good as they are they would also benefit from a further restoration.
Younger were renowned for their high quality workmanship and mainly retailed through Heals. Featuring tapered solid afromosia legs and sides with a stunning teak veneered top. The table extends by simply pulling the ends apart which reveals the stored extension leaves which fold up and out, the table is then pushed back together.
This range appears in the 1964 catalog but was taken out of production by 1968 when the Younger range was considerably rationalized to reduce costs and prices to compete in a changing market.
In good vintage condition. The table has a nice colour and grain with no obvious marks or damage. The chairs are strong and sturdy with only signs of wear to the vinyl seat pads. The fold-over leaf should have a brass catch to hold it in place so that it doesn’t move when the table is turned over. Sadly this is no longer present.
