This elegant daybed or sofa is named ‘Minerva’ (model FD417) after the goddess of wisdom; a true midcentury classic designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for France and Son, designed originally in 1957. This particular sofa was produced in the 1960s.
A stylish addition to any vintage inspired interior and a handy extra for when guests come over!
Both the seat / mattress are sprung with original metal springs and are newly upholstered with a Forest Green boucle wool and nylon fabric. The orginal cream protective lining is underneath. The tone of the upholstery forms a wonderful union with the teak frame. Underneath the seating, four tapered teak wooden legs lift up the base.
The wooden teak frame is in very good condition, the back rest is solid and the metal springs are free from rust. The France & Son badge is present on the frame. Please review the photos – happy to answer any questions.

Danish designer duo Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993) worked together between 1944-1975. The couple, originally trained as architects, designed around 250 furniture objects. The first dismountable chair has been designed by the couple, that created an enormous boost for the Danish furniture export. In 1950, their best-known design, the AX-chair went into production by Fritz Hansen. The implementation of double bent laminated wood, a technique normally used to produce tennis rackets, was a huge breakthrough for the upscaling of furniture production as it reduces the average production time. Thanks to this revolutionary technique, Denmark became the leader in Modern furniture manufacturing.
