Vintage Plus-a-Gram Portable Record Player Garrard 33/45/78

Vintage Plus-a-Gram Portable Record Player Garrard 33/45/78

03/10/2017

Vintage Plus-a-Gram Portable Record Player Garrard 33/45/78    SOLD

Cosmetically this is really good and clean considering its age!

It will need a service and cartridge or needle to get playing again therefore sold for Repairs or Spares.

The best thing about this item is the cosmetic condition and it’s a great colour.

I will ship but this will be the buyers responsibility message me to organise after sale agreed.

The Plus-A-Gram, as its name suggests, was an add-on turntable designed to be plugged in to the GRAM input of a valve radio, instead of having a built-in amplifier and speaker. They were made by J and A Margolin of Old Street, East London, from the 1930s-1950s. The Margolin family started off making and selling furniture and musical instruments. The Plus-a-Gram was just one of their products (they made the cabinet and bought in the record deck) but it became so successful that they soon made nothing else. Even their workshop in Old Street was named “Plus-A-Gram House”.

In the early 1950s the turntable maker BSR approached the Margolins and asked them to build a self-contained portable record player. BSR even suggested a name for it – “Dansette”. Unlike the Plus-A-Gram which needed to be plugged in to a radio, the Dansette gave teenagers the chance to listen to rock’n’roll music in their bedroom, away from the family radio and their disapproving parents. The Dansette was hugely successful, selling over 1 million units. The J & A Margolin company moved out of Plus-A-Gram House into bigger premises and renamed itself Dansette Products Limited.
