Antique Oak Glenister’s High Wycombe Armchair / Carver Chair SOLD
A beautiful Antique Glenister’s High Wycombe Armchair /Carver / Farmhouse / Captains / Office Chair. Full of original character and charm.
Probably dating to the beginning of the 20th century and is in excellent structural condition considering its age. Very sturdy, no signs of worm or sign I ant structural splits in the wood. An obvious warping through use and age evident in the seat!!
Stunning detailing on the legs. Makers mark stamped on the chair.
Glenister’s was founded by Daniel Glenister in 1839. He was, at the time, a publican and if the local chairmakers couldn’t pay their tab at the bar, they made up chairs out of spare parts for him, which he then sold. This sideline soon became more profitable than the pub giving birth to the company.
The core business of the firm became Windsor-style chairs and Refectory tables, settees and arm chairs. Glenister’s took orders for the Ministry of Supply, providing furniture for barracks, libraries and hospitals (including screens). At this time the business was in Queen’s Square, High Wycombe.
